CMCC: Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change, Italy

The CMCC is an Italian research centre dedicated to climate and climate related research, which started its operations in mid-2005. The CMCC is operated by a Research Consortium consisting of different Italian public and private research Institutions and led by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), that is responsible for the management of research funds for the programme, supported by the Ministry for the Environment and Territory the Ministry for Education, University and Research and the Ministry for Economy. The CMCC is based in Lecce (Italy).

A significant component of the research is on the monitoring of the eco-environmental resources and specifically water. International cooperation is an essential activity of the CMCC and it is achieved through several international projects supported financially by the CMCC, bilateral agreements between Italy and other countries and European projects in which CMCC is a partner. The CMCC provides research coordination/management of international projects led by Italian ministries and provides technical support in several multilateral international activities such as UNFCCC, UNCCD, IPCC and UNEP.

The CMCC is a programmes/project funding body in the field of climate change and its related fields, including water. Also the CMCC supports and funds international cooperation in the Euro Mediterranean area and in particular in the developing countries and economy in transition countries through several international projects, bilateral agreements and multilateral agreements with the participation also of the IMETS. The work is particularly relevant to the EUWI-ERA-NET as it includes management of research devoted to assess impacts on soil, ecosystems, water cycle and training in these fields.

Three specific programmes that CMCC are managing are given below:

  • Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i cambiamenti climatici (2006-9)
  • Cooperazione Italia-USA su Scienza e Tecnologia dei cambiamenti climatici (2006-8)
  • Programma Cooperazione Italia-Romania su Ricerca Ambientale ed Educativa (2006-8)

The mission of the CMCC is to improve our understanding of the nature and mechanisms of climate variability, its causes and its impacts, with a special emphasis on the Mediterranean Area and its interactions with the global climate. Also the international cooperation is an essential activity of the CMCC and it is finalized through several international projects supported financially by the CMCC, bilateral agreements between Italy and other countries and European projects in which CMCC is a partner. The CMCC is also aimed through satellite remote sensing to:

  • The monitoring of the eco-environmental resources (water, agricolture, forestry)
  • The analyis and prevention of the risks due to natural and anthropogenic hazards
  • Monitoring of the energy and transportation networks

Furthermore, through the capabilities of its members and associate members, the CMCC can deliver scientific-technical products and technical support to ministries, regions and provinces and the private sector on themes such as:

  • Climate change assessements
  • The protection of the marine environment of the Mediterranean Sea towards a sustainable use of the resources
  • Ecology, forestry science, health and economy
  • Risk management (natural hazards related to climate, oil spills, coastal euthrophication, water resources, etc.)
  • Transportation, agricolture, energy and tourism

Finally the CMCC provides research coordination/management of international projects led by Italian ministries and provides technical support in several multilateral international activities such as UNFCCC, UNCCD, IPCC and UNEP.

Role in SPLASH:

The CMCC will be responsible for leading the Workpackage 2 on information review and analysis and will undertake the information collection, synthesis and communications of the Workpackage. The information requirements produced by Task 2.1 will be distributed to all countries participating to the project.This task will complete a common basic knowledge of all the existing supporting agencies and ministries policies in Europe and the linkages of these policies to the European related policies. A final Synthesis Report form the information collected at national and EU level shall be produced by the Task Leader. Besides, CMCC will play an active role also in WP6 along with the other Italian Partner IMET.
